The Eastern Region Soybean Board is hosted by the Pennsylvania Soybean Promotion Board. This enables Eastern Region producers to maximize their checkoff dollars by taking advantage of a shared, experienced executive and by saving on overhead costs associated with an independent office.

The directors shown on the right of this page focus checkoff dollars on conducting soybean research, marketing and education in a manner which supports the profitability of the region's soybean farmers and soybean industry.

Growers in the Northeast contribute significantly to total U.S. soybean production, which continues to lead the world.

Here are some official figures from the 2007 harvest.

West Virginia - Growers harvested 500,000 bushels from 15,000 acres, with an average 33 bushels per acre. Crop value was estimated at $5 million.

Pennsylvania - The 2007 soybean crop in the Commonwealth was valued at $168 million. Growers harvested 17 million bushels from 425,000 acres for an average yield of 41 bushels an acre.

Eastern Region Board of Directors

The Northeast Region Board includes the directors of the Pennsylvania Board and the United Soybean Board representatives for the region and longtime industry advisor Dennis Phelps, who is a past USB director and farms in New York.

Rick Stern was first elected to the United Soybean Board's Executive Committee during its December 2006 Board Meeting. He represents the Northeast Region.

Russ Carpenter represents New York on the United Soybean Board. Jim Musser and William Beam represent Pennsylvania on the United Soybean Board.

The Chautauqua County Dairy Ambassador models a cow hat at the 2008 Empire Farm Days. The Northeast Region Soybean Board is working to promote support for animal agriculture. New York livestock consumed 340,000 short tons of soybean meal in 2006, with dairy cattle consuming about 145,000 short tons.
